Updated 26 August 2026 · Oernoe Editorial Team
This URL used to be a brochure about why Oernoe was “built around user privacy.” It overlapped About, the privacy essays, and the ads guide. Origin stories that do not name a rejected idea are marketing. This page names the ideas.
Angel Mejia Rodriguez still uses one test: does the feature give people more control over their data, or less? If it is less, it does not ship. Anoepal exists so that test can survive a week when money is tight. The test is only real if you can point at work that died because of it.
Mail as a live product
Oernoe started with the idea of private email and a search engine. Search shipped. Mail did not. For a while www.oernoe.com still had a Mail page that talked as if encryption, instant delivery, and a launch date were facts you could sign up for. The page collected email addresses into a form that did nothing. That is less control: we would have held personal data with no service and no honest delivery date.
The rejected version was “keep the waiting list, it is only marketing.” The shipped version is a status notice at /mail that says there is no product and no list. It is noindexed. If Mail is built later, it will be announced in the journal and linked from the services menu like every live host. Until then, the honest page is the one that refuses to pretend.
A query file for advertising
Search has to see queries. The rejected idea is using that history as an advertising profile, or joining it to Google ads on this publisher site. That join would make the ads more valuable. It would also mean a search for a medical symptom could follow someone onto a How-To page. That is less control. It does not ship.
What did ship is the split in Search queries and Google ads: Search does not sell query files; selected finished pages on www may show contextual Google ads; those systems do not share an advertising dossier. If we cannot keep that split in code, we should take the ads down, not blur the sentence.
Ads inside Chat, Health, or Drive
Private product surfaces are a tempting place to put units because people linger there. They are also where messages, notes, and files live. Putting AdSense next to a health note or a chat thread would make this company a publisher of other people’s private objects. That is less control. Ads stay off Chat, Health, AI, Docs, Drive, Tracker, and Account. If a unit appears there, it is a bug.
The same rejection applies to unmoderated comments under journal articles. Google’s publisher rules require user-generated areas to be moderated. We do not staff a moderation desk. The rejected idea was “leave comments open, it looks like a community.” The shipped idea is mail to the Contact inboxes. Slower. Cleaner. Not a spam magnet under every article.
Generic SEO as a growth plan
After an AdSense “low value content” finding, the easy move is to publish more pages about “search engines,” “SEO in 2026,” and “privacy tools that work.” We already had some of those. They were long and empty. Shipping more of them would have grown the sitemap and made the rejection more deserved.
The rejected plan was volume. The shipped plan is a smaller public index: 700 words as a floor, a denylist of brochure slugs, noindex on unfinished announcements, and rewrites that only keep a URL if this site needed to exist for the document to be true. That work is listed in Corrections we have already made and in How we keep the journal index honest.
Pretending unreleased products are live
Maps, Music, Studio, News, and OerAlerts have been discussed. They are not homepage products. Writing as if a stranger can open them today is the same class of error as the Mail waiting list. The homepage directory is the live list: Search, Health, Chat, AI, Docs, Drive, Tracker. If a draft disagrees with that list, the draft waits or it says so.
Health is a private workspace for notes you choose to keep. It is not a doctor. Shipping it as a diagnostic product would have been a different company, and a worse one. The rejected claim is “Health replaces a clinic.” The shipped claim is on the homepage and on How-To: notes, not care.
What this does not prove
Rejecting a feature does not make Oernoe finished, large, or uniquely moral. It makes a small operator slightly harder to accidentally turn into an ad network with a search box taped on. Google ads still appear on eligible publisher pages. Request logs still exist. AI output is still not advice. Those limits are in Privacy and in the AI policy library.
If a later feature ships that fails the control test, this page should gain a new entry rather than a slogan about always having been careful. That is the only origin story worth keeping on this URL.
